Marilyn Bulli joined the Conservatory in 2002 and is an instructor of voice for classical voice, opera, and musical theater students.
Bulli has held teaching positions at St. Olaf College (Minnesota), Emerson College, the University of Rhode Island, the New School of Music (Massachusetts), and the University of Massachusetts Boston, where she also served as coordinator of the voice faculty. She has received many honors and awards throughout her teaching and performance career, including first place in the Nebraska District Metropolitan Opera auditions, finalist placing in the Oratorio Society of New York Competition (Carnegie Hall), and first place in the Bel Canto Regional Artists Competition (Wisconsin), and she has been a Bach Aria Festival and Institute fellow, an Amherst Early Music Festival scholarship fellow, and a St. Botolph Club Foundation performance grant recipient. Bulli is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, College Music Society, and the American Guild of Music Artists (board of governors member). A featured performer in numerous opera, oratorio, and recital performances, she has appeared on stage with Boston Lyric Opera as a soloist and core ensemble member (performing more than 50 productions with the company), Emmanuel Music, the Handel and Haydn Society, and Boston Baroque. She has extensive performance experience with conductors Seiji Ozawa, John Harbison, Stephen Lord, Christopher Hogwood, Grant Llewellyn, and William Christie and directors Nicholas Muni, Christopher Alden, Leon Major, Colin Graham, and Mary Zimmerman.
Bulli holds a D.M.A. and an M.M. in vocal performance from Indiana University and a B.A. in music education from St. Olaf College. Additional studies include the opera program of the American Institute of Music Studies in Austria, the Wesley Balk Opera/Music-Theater Institute (Minnesota), and Kristin Linklater’s Freeing the Natural Voice workshops. She has coached opera repertoire with Joan Dornemann, Will Graham, and Susan Ormont, and she has studied voice with Sharon Daniels, Phyllis Curtin, Martha Lipton, Reri Grist, and Virginia Zeani. She has also studied dance (ballet/modern), yoga, and Alexander Technique.
