An evening of cello works performed by Nicholas Johnson (G.P.D. '22, cello), including pieces by Luciano Berio, César Franck, Osvaldo Golijov, and Errollyn Wallen.

Influenced by Kandyan drumming, Berio’s "Sequenza XIV" creates a unique dialogue between the melodic and the percussive capabilities of the cello. Originally written for violin, Franck’s "A Major Sonata" is a cyclic wonder, with each movement being drawn from the initial three notes in the piano. Golijov’s "Omaramor" is a tango fantasy laid on top of Carlos Gardel’s “Mi Buenos Aires Querido.” Wallen’s "Dervish" is inspired by the Sufi worship practice of the dervish, growing in its passionate meditation from stillness to speed.
