For centuries, religion has significantly influenced, supported, and inspired the creation and advancement of music. Modern western musical notation even cites its origins to the ninth century Catholic church. In this performance, the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble—joined by the Boston Conservatory Chorale—explore works by composers John Mackey, Omar Thomas, and Susan Botti, fueled with religious inspiration.

About the Artist

Matthew M. Marsit, conductor, is an active conductor and clarinetist who has led ensembles and performed as a solo, chamber, and orchestral musician throughout the United States. In addition to his work as a conductor, Marsit has served as chair of instrumental studies at Boston Conservatory at Berklee since 2018, and also serves as artistic director of the Charles River Wind Ensemble. Marsit has previously held conducting positions at Dartmouth College, Ithaca College, Cornell University, Drexel University, Symphony Nova, Chestnut Hill Orchestra, Bucks County Youth Ensembles, Performing Arts Institute of Wyoming Seminary, and Eastern US Music Camp. As a clarinetist, Marsit has performed with many ensembles including the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Baltimore Symphony, Fairmont Chamber Orchestra, and Cornell University’s Ensemble X, and he has made solo appearances with Cleveland State University Bands, the Keene State College Band, Handel Society of Dartmouth College, Cornell University Jazz Ensemble, Performing Arts Institute Wind Ensemble, Drexel University Symphony Orchestra, and Chestnut Hill Orchestra. Marsit has served as clarinet faculty at Plymouth State University. A champion for new music and advancing the wind ensemble repertoire, he has led premiere performances of works by Christopher Marshall, Louis Andriessen, Daniel Basford, Christopher Theofanidis, Richard Marriott, Michael Gandolfi, Matthew Herman, Edward Green, and Thomas Miller, among others.

Stephen Spinelli, conductor, joined Boston Conservatory in 2022. He previously served as the assistant director of choral programs at Cornell University, and held visiting appointments at Thomas Jefferson University, Moravian College, Villanova University, and Syracuse University. Spinelli has sung with some of the country’s leading vocal ensembles. As a tenor with the Crossing, his credits include the 2018 Grammy Award–winning recording of Gavin Bryars’s The Fifth Century. Spinelli also performed with the genre-bending vocal octet Roomful of Teeth. He assisted in the production of their Grammy Award–winning debut album, which yielded the Pulitzer Prize-winning recording of Caroline Shaw’s Partita for Eight Voices. As a frequently engaged guest conductor, he particularly cherishes his experiences leading the Maui Chamber Orchestra and Chorus. Spinelli’s research reexamines the contributions of historically erased composers. He is a proud cofounder of ONEcomposer, a non-profit organization dedicated to research, publication, performance, and recording in celebration of historically excluded musical voices. ONEcomposer’s collaboration with the Philadelphia Orchestra to present the original orchestration of Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement was hailed as “a knockout” by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Spinelli’s scholarship earned him a Beinecke Research Fellowship at Yale University, sparking a two-year collaboration with Opera Philadelphia that will present the stories of Price, Margaret Bonds, and other legendary creatives on stages that include the Academy of Music and the Mann Center for the Performing Arts. Spinelli will serve as an editor for forthcoming editions of Bonds’s music published by Hildegard Press, and his work inspired ONEcomposer's podcast, the Archives: ALIVE, which will launch in collaboration with the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Spinelli holds degrees from Williams College, Temple University, and Northwestern University.
