Q&A with Simon Dyer

Opera student Simon Dyer (G.P.D. '17) talks about the program's supportive faculty, his affection for the nearby Museum of Fine Arts, and his role as an emerging artist with Boston Lyric Opera.

Which song in your iTunes has the most plays?

Joint top is James Blake covering Joni Mitchell's song "A Case of You," and "Come scoglio" from Così fan tutte.

Who is your favorite composer, singer, artist, or band?

FKA Twigs.

What was your favorite movie this the past year?

I am honestly so terrible with seeing movies. I haven't been to the cinema since 2012 and I mostly just watch Labyrinth with David Bowie over and over.

What do you do to "destress"?

I stretch most mornings. I like to workout and, of course, read!

What is your favorite thing to do in Boston?

The Museum of Fine Arts; it offers endless knowledge and beauty.

What's one thing about being a classical singer that most non-music people don't know or realize?

I feel grateful that the traditional stereotype of an opera singer as a busty lady with horns on her hat screaming high notes has largely dissolved.

What's your favorite thing about the Conservatory?

Coming from Europe, the attitude and excitement of a school like this, combined with its inclusiveness and small size, continually makes me feel grateful for my choices.

What has been your favorite role to play or sing on stage?

Nick Shadow in The Rake's Progress right here at the Conservatory. I got to wear three-inch heels, a white corset, and a four-foot-long white wig! Also, the music and story have so much that you can sink your teeth into both as a singer and singing actor.

What do you think is the best aspect of the G.P.D. program?

The relationship that we have with the faculty and their readiness to support us and answer any questions we have (almost) any time of day.

What is something that you're currently involved in that you would have never guessed you'd be involved in?

I am currently an emerging artist with Boston Lyric Opera. That's sort of cool, isn't it?
