Boston Conservatory at Berklee Center Stage will present the East Coast premiere of the fully orchestrated version of the contemporary opera Glory Denied from December 5 through 8 at Boston Conservatory Theater.

Glory Denied is a poignant saga of America during the Vietnam War, based on the true story of America’s longest-held prisoner of war, Colonel Jim Thompson. This profoundly moving story and soaring score by leading American composer Tom Cipullo tell Thompson’s story through younger and older versions of Thompson and his wife, Alyce, who traverse a complex emotional landscape through hope, despair, love, hate, courage, and forgiveness. Glory Denied will be sung in English with English supertitles.

Boston Conservatory will host composer Tom Cipullo as an artist in residence, during which time he will attend performances and guest teach Conservatory voice and opera students.

"Glory Denied is an incredibly powerful opera that honors the sacrifices of our military families and celebrates the strength and resilience of the human spirit, even under the most difficult circumstances,” said Pape. “We are thrilled to have Tom Cipullo on campus to work with our students as they prepare and perform this important American opera."

Cipullo will also present a post-performance talkback with audience members after the Glory Denied performance on Friday, December 6. The opera will be conducted by Associate Professor of Opera Andrew Altenbach and directed by Head of Opera Johnathon Pape. Audiences are advised that the production contains scenes with strong language and depictions of violence and mental illness, including post-traumatic stress disorder.

Tickets for Glory Denied are $15 to $20, with discounts available. A special $5 ticket promotion runs Monday, November 25 through Monday, December 2. View Boston Conservatory’s 2019–2020 Center Stage lineup at bostonconservatory.berklee.edu/centerstage.
