Graduate Chamber Choir: The Last Shall Be First—Celebrating the 300th Anniversary of Bach’s Arrival in Leipzig
The Graduate Chamber Choir presents The Last Shall Be First—Celebrating the 300th Anniversary of Bach’s Arrival in Leipzig, directed by Dr. Stephen Spinelli and graduate conducting candidates Naomi Bennett and Edith Hernandez.
In 1723, J.S. Bach was hired as the music director to succeed Johann Kuhnau at the Thomanerchor. Lesser-known is the fact that he was the search committee’s third choice, behind Georg Philipp Telemann and Christoph Graupner. The Last Shall be First examines the oddity of human subjectivity and celebrates composers who may not have won the big job or gotten the award, but whose music lives on through its power and excellence.
