I seek to build a bridge between the classical Italianate values of vocal technique with our most current understanding of scientific vocal pedagogy, to create physical ease in any style of singing, and to ultimately uncover the joy of artistic expression made possible by freedom in one's technique.

Kerry Deal joined the Conservatory in 2002 and is an associate professor of voice. She teaches musical theater and voice and opera students, as well as vocal pedagogy courses, including Repertoire for the Teaching Studio and Comparative Pedagogy.

A full-lyric soprano, Deal remains a versatile performer in Greater Boston. She is a frequent interpreter of Mozart, including his Requiem, Coronation Mass, Solemn Vespers, Regina Coeli, and Grand Mass in C Minor, but her performances also encompass a variety of other sacred and orchestral works, ranging from Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Creation to the more romantic and contemporary works of Strauss, Brahms, Fauré, Gounod, and Bernstein. Also a champion of new music, Deal has premiered and recorded new works with St. Cecilia Music in Boston, as well as world premieres of art song in Rubinstein Hall in the Munich Steinway-Haus. As a young artist at Opera in the Ozarks, Deal sang the role of Mimi in La Bohème. More locally, she has sung with Longwood Opera and Opera Aperta and with New York Opera Forum as Nedda in I Pagliacci.

Deal earned her B.A., magna cum laude, in languages and literature at the College of William and Mary before pursuing graduate studies in music, with an M.M. from Boston Conservatory and a D.M.A. in voice performance from Boston University. Deal also holds a faculty position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and serves as voice faculty and stage director for the International Performing Arts Institute in Germany each summer.

Former students of Deal's have found success in both operatic and musical theater mediums, with acceptance to important young-artist programs and contracts in regional opera and theater as well as on Broadway, at Carnegie Hall, and in national and international tours.
