I bring a singer's perspective to the study of diction, combining a focus on the character of each language with a consideration of vocal possibilities to enhance expression and interpretation.
Pamela Dellal joined the Conservatory in 2006 and is an assistant professor of music. She teaches Italian and German diction at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the voice/opera program.
As a professional mezzo-soprano, Dellal enjoys a distinguished career as an acclaimed soloist and recitalist. She has performed at Symphony Hall, the Kennedy Center, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall and premiered a Harbison chamber work in New York, San Francisco, Boston, and London. With the renowned medieval ensemble Sequentia, Dellal recorded the music of Hildegard von Bingen and toured the United States, Europe, and Australia. Passionate about chamber music, early music, and contemporary music, she has appeared frequently with the Boston Early Music Festival, Dinosaur Annex, Boston Musica Viva, Ensemble Chaconne, Blue Heron Renaissance Choir, and the Musicians of the Old Post Road. She has been a regular soloist in the Emmanuel Music Bach Cantata series for over 30 years, having performed almost all 200 of Bach’s extant sacred cantatas. Her extensive discography of more than 30 titles includes recordings on the Albany, Arabesque, Artona, BMG, CRI, Dorian, Meridian, and Koch labels.
Dellal is widely sought after as a translator of lyric texts, and her oeuvre includes the complete texted works of J. S. Bach, Handel opera libretti, and numerous other works in German, Italian, French, and Latin. She is currently finishing the complete songs of C.P.E. Bach for the C.P.E. Bach Complete Edition.
Dellal received a B.M. in vocal performance from Boston University and acquired experience and advanced training in historical performance practice through her wide-ranging professional engagements. She has served as faculty at the Amherst Early Music Festival and Brandeis University and is currently faculty at the Longy School of Music of Bard College. Dellal maintains a private voice studio in Belmont, Massachusetts.
