Boston Conservatory Announces New Artistry in Action Series
Boston Conservatory at Berklee announces the launch of a new performance series, Artistry in Action, which celebrates exceptional artists and initiatives that exemplify Boston Conservatory’s core values of excellence, innovation, and community engagement. Hosted by the Conservatory’s Music Division, the series combines the school’s prestigious and long-standing Piano Masters Series, String Masters Series, and Chamber Series with exciting new programming for winds, faculty recitals, and ensembles in residence.
“This new series represents a comprehensive sampling of our division’s many high-caliber performances,” says Boston Conservatory at Berklee Dean of Music Michael Shinn. “The artists we are showcasing through Artistry in Action not only represent exceptional artistry and talent, they also model for our students the Conservatory’s values of community engagement and artist citizenry. We firmly believe that inspiring, quality music should be accessible to all communities, and this series aims to provide that.”
The Fall 2022 Lineup
The fall 2022 Artistry in Action lineup includes a broad range of events that represent both Boston Conservatory’s music tradition, and its innovation.
Among the most enduring of the school’s performance series is the prestigious Piano Masters Series, artistically directed by renowned pianist and Boston Conservatory faculty member Michael Lewin. Now presenting twice a semester, Piano Masters Series welcomes the world’s most impressive pianists to the Conservatory campus for an affordable concert and free master class. This fall, Boston Conservatory is thrilled to present virtuoso Taiwanese artist Ching-Yun Hu on October 11 and acclaimed Filipina pianist Cecile Licad on November 15.
Similarly, String Masters Series celebrates leading string players from around the world, offering two exquisite concerts each semester with corresponding master classes. The series is artistically directed by revered cellist and Boston Conservatory faculty member Andrew Mark, and will present violinist Daniel Kurganov on October 23, accompanied by pianist Constantine Finehouse, and double bassist Xavier Foley on November 6. While the piano and string masters series engage guest artists, Chamber Series showcases the incredible talent of Boston Conservatory’s faculty with chamber music performances of all styles and genres. This fall, it will present a star-studded concert on October 7 featuring Boston Conservatory faculty members Judith Eissenberg (violin), Amanda Hardy (oboe), Patrice Jackson-Tilghman (cello), Jung-Ja Kim (piano), Sharan Leventhal (violin), Matthew Marsit (clarinet, Chair of Instrumental Studies), Andrew Mark (cello), Roberto Poli (piano), and YaoGuang Zhai (clarinet) performing works by Bartók, Beethoven, Bohuslav Martinů, and Jesse Montgomery. In addition to these three beloved series, Artistry in Action will debut a number of innovative new events this fall, including Double Reed Weekend, Single Reed Weekend, and several faculty recitals—all free and open to the public.
Double Reed Weekend, supported by partners F. Lorée Oboes and the Boston Woodwind Society, takes place at Boston Conservatory on September 17 and 18. A celebration of double reed artistry and innovation, the event features performances and master classes by esteemed guest artist Elizabeth Masoudnia, John Ferrillo, Michael Rabinowitz, Stuart Breczinski, Nancy Goeres, Alexander Davis, and Barbara LaFitte, as well as Boston Conservatory at Berklee faculty members Amanda Hardy, Margaret Phillips, and Robert Sheena. Single Reed Weekend follows on October 15 and 16 with a similar format. Designed for professionals, amateurs, and music lovers, the weekend features performances and master classes by sought-after guest artists Yehuda Gilad, Tibi Cziger, and Jonathan Hulting-Cohen, and Boston Conservatory at Berklee faculty members YaoGuang Zhai, Jan Halloran, Philipp Stäudlin, and Matthew Marsit, chair of instrumental studies. In addition to sharing quality performance and educational opportunities with the community at no cost, Boston Conservatory is also thrilled to offer a special opportunity to prospective students: a chance to win a full-tuition scholarship to Boston Conservatory that covers the duration of their program. Through Artistry in Action, the Music Division will also present its world-renowned faculty in recital. These free performances will occur throughout the fall semester, and include events such as Faculty Brass Quintet (October 14), Faculty Woodwind Quintet (October 23), and more.
