Andrew Mark is a professor of cello and chamber music at the Conservatory.
From 1988 to 1991, Mark served as a U.S. Artistic Ambassador, giving recitals and master classes throughout Europe, Asia, Central America, and South America. He was cellist of the Boston Composers String Quartet (1987–1994), winner of the silver medal at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Mark also played cello for the CORE Ensemble (1993–2000), an award-winning trio of cello, piano, and percussion, dedicated to the creation and performance of new music. He has premiered more than 100 new chamber works and collaborated with composers such as Donald Martino, Bernard Rands, Leon Kirchner, Augusta Reed Thomas, and Witold Lutoslawski.
Mark’s festival performances include Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music, Newport Music Festival, Moscow Autumn Festival, Schreyahner Herbst Festival (Germany), June in Buffalo Festival, Daytona International Festival, Chautauqua Festival, Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Chichibu (Japan) International Music Festival, Esmeraldas (Ecuador) International Music Festival, Guadalajara (Mexico) International Music Festival, and the Portland Chamber Music Festival. As an orchestral player, he performs regularly with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and has served as an extra player with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops since 1990. Mark has given solo concerto performances with the Florida Philharmonic, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Boston, the Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, New Hampshire Symphony, Waterloo Symphony (Indiana), and the Yamagata Symphony (Japan), as well as numerous ensembles in the New England area. His recordings can be heard on the New World, Koch, Albany, Dorian, CRI, Ongaku, and Neuma labels.
In addition to Boston Conservatory, Mark is a faculty member at New England Conservatory’s Preparatory Division and is an adjunct instructor at Walnut Hill School for the Arts and MIT. He previously served on the faculty of the Longy School of Music. Mark has taught master classes at the Central Conservatory in Beijing, the Sichuan Conservatory (China), the Sibelius Academy (Finland), Enescu Conservatory (Romania), Nuremberg Conservatory (Germany), Reykjavik College of Music (Iceland), and throughout the United States. He has taught at the Heifetz International Music Institute junior division since its founding in 2016.
Over the years, Mark’s teaching excellence has been recognized by esteemed organizations, including the Foundation for the Advancement of String Education and American String Teachers Association (Massachusetts Chapter).
