Q&A with Kurt Douglas, Summer Dance Intensive Program Director
What is the most important idea or skill that you want participants to take away from the Conservatory’s Summer Dance Intensive?
I want them to discover their ability to celebrate who they are as moving bodies and trust their artistic voices. I want them to walk away from the program with a deeper understanding of the dance world, and the diverse cultures and communities that exist within it. I want our SDI students to leave the program artistically and technically stronger. What our students discover during our three-week program will help them understand the importance of theory and practice.
Who is your favorite dancer and/or choreographer working today?
I am inspired by many performers and choreographers from around the world. One of my favorite choreographers working in the field today is Darrell Grand Moultrie. For me, Darrell embodies true artistry. He is as passionate about educating young artists as he is about making art, and this idea truly inspires me.
What is your favorite SDI memory?
My favorite memory from summer 2017 was when our SDI students performed at the end of the program. They performed works created by some of today’s most cutting-edge choreographers including Aszure Barton, Ronald K. Brown, Lar Lubovitch, Dwight Rhoden, Sidra Bell, and José Limón. Performing works choreographed by these incredible artists is a rare experience and a unique opportunity for SDI participants.
What can students expect from this program?
Students will immerse themselves in a variety of classes including ballet, improvisation, choreography, repertory classes, and more. Each week, students study with world-renowned guest artists and Conservatory faculty members that will ignite their spirits and inspire their souls.
What have some former SDI students gone on to do in the field?
Some of our dancers have gone on to dance in some of the best college dance programs in the country, including the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Former students have performed with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Buglisi Dance Theatre, Limón Dance Company, Ballet Hispanico, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and more.
When did you know you wanted to pursue dance as a career?
I knew I wanted to pursue a dance career as a high school student. I was fortunate to attend LaGuardia High School in New York, where the arts were well supported. Being surrounded by such creative minds gave me the courage to choose dance as a discipline. I have continued to be inspired, curious, and moved by dance ever since.
Who should attend SDI?
This three-week intensive is for students who are looking to develop their artistry and technical skills as they immerse themselves into the world of contemporary dance. Students who are interested in high-quality pre-professional training while working in diverse styles of dance taught by current masters in the field will benefit most from this program.
