Performance Highlights

The evening will feature Alan Cumming performing with students, as well as performances by noted violinist and faculty member Markus Placci (G.P.D. '04, A.D.P. '06, violin), soprano Vanessa Becerra (M.M. ’14, opera), dance faculty member and Limon practitioner Kurt Douglas (B.F.A. '02, dance), and Broadway actress and alumna Alysha Umphress (B.F.A. '04, musical theater).

More about Alan Cumming

Alan Cumming is an actor and activist beyond eclectic and, according to the New York Times, “a bawdy countercultural sprite.” Time magazine named him one of the most fun people in show business. He played political maverick Eli Gold on CBS’s The Good Wife, for which he received Golden Globe, Emmy, SAG, and Satellite award nominations, and last year finished his Tony Award-winning role of the Emcee in the Broadway musical Cabaret. Cumming’s diverse career has found him performing at venues around the globe, making back-to-back films with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls; directing and starring in a musical condom commercial; creating the voices of a Smurf, a goat, and Adolf Hitler; entering upside down and suspended by his ankles in the Greek tragedy The Bacchae (National Theatre of Scotland), and recording an award-winning album of songs (plus a dance remix). Cumming is also Host of PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery!, and appeared opposite Lisa Kudrow in Showtime’s Web Therapy. He has written for the New York Times, Newsweek, Harper’s Bazaar, Out, The Globe and Mail, and authored three books: Tommy’s Tale, the #1 New York Times best-selling memoir Not My Father’s Son, and his new book of photographs and stories, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams. A tireless champion for LGBT civil rights and HIV/AIDS activism, Cumming serves on the Board of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and works closely with amfAR, The Trevor Project, and the Ali Forney Center to name but a few. In 2009, Cumming was included in the Queen’s Honors List to receive an OBE for services to film, theater, and the arts, and for activism in the LGBT community in the U.S. In his native Scotland, where he was a vocal supporter of the YES for independence campaign, he was awarded the Great Scot and Icon of Scotland awards, and has recently had his portrait unveiled at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
