ABOUT THE COURSE
Introduction to Creative Media Technology teaches students how to leverage the capabilities of everyday technology to enhance their artistry and gain practical skills in creating high-quality audiovisual content. Throughout the course, students will learn basic audio and video production skills, from recording and editing techniques to understanding the necessity of developing a strong online presence and using AI in the context of artistic expression. Additionally, this course emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, providing students with the opportunity to work with peers from diverse disciplines, fostering creativity and innovation across different areas of study.
The class is offered in a blended modality format, with a mix of asynchronous online work and in-person meetings. It meets for the equivalent of one hour weekly and provides one credit. It is a required course for all first-year Conservatory students and can be taken in either the fall or spring semester.
COURSE MATERIALS
In order to be successful in Introduction to Creative Media Technology, students will need to have access to hardware and software that meets the minimum requirements outlined below.
Hardware Requirements and Recommendations
- Video recording device
- Apple and/or Android device
- Smartphone or tablet, preferably
- Audio recording/video editing device
- Apple and/or PC/Android device
- Computer, laptop, or tablet, preferably
- Pair of headphones
Students may use both Apple and Android/PC devices to record and edit. It is not a requirement that the video recording and audio recording/video editing devices run on the same operating system. Additionally, some devices are flexible enough to do both video and audio recording/editing. Owning a smartphone or tablet for recording complements owning a computer by providing the flexibility to capture content in diverse locations and situations. Below is a list of recommended devices and their functionality:
- Smartphones and tablets: Apple and Android devices can be used for recording and editing audio and video.
- Computer or laptop: MacBook/MacBook Pro/iMac or any Windows computer/laptop can be used for recording and editing audio and video.
- Headphones: Any decent quality headphones will suffice for monitoring audio recordings/playback.

- Capcut: Free app download for both iOS and Android
- Audio editing software
- Bandlab: Free browser-based software for both iOS and Android

The following is a list of accessories that you may find helpful for this course; however, these items are not required.
External Microphone Options:
NOTE: Students should ensure the compatibility of the external USB mic by checking the type of USB connection (USB-A or USB-C).
NOTE: To use an XLR microphone, students will need to purchase an audio interface, such as the Scarlett Solo (third gen, approximately $99) or Scarlett 2i2 (third gen, approximately $119).

Additional Technology Recommendations: Device Protection
It is recommended that you protect and care for your device(s) as you would any other valuable resource. Repairs can be very expensive. If theft, breakage, or other damage occurs (regardless of fault), you are responsible for the cost of any and all repairs or replacement. It is strongly recommended to purchase third-party insurance.

A: Yes, all undergraduate students studying at the Conservatory are required to take C-PR 1001 Introduction to Creative Media Technology in the fall or spring semester of their first year.
Q: What if I feel like I already have the knowledge described; is there a way to test out for credit?
A: Yes, students may attempt to test out of C-PR 1001 Introduction to Creative Media Technology one time. Visit the test-out criteria page for more information (login required).

A: No, the Conservatory is not responsible for replacing lost, stolen, or damaged devices. The purchase and cost are solely your responsibility.
