The Shadow: Reading of a New Musical
Please note that only the Monday performance will be livestreamed.
Boston Conservatory presents a new musical written by Katya Stanislavskaya and directed by Ilana Ransom Toeplitza. This family-friendly production is adapted from both The Shadow, a fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson, and Ten’ (The Shadow), a 1940 work by the Soviet playwright Eugene Schwartz. A naïve, idealistic scholar travels to a foreign land to finish his research about the existence of magic. He falls in love with his neighbor, a princess who lives incognito among her people, in search for her true love and the nation’s next king. Having no interest in being king, the scholar tries to convince the princess to leave the monarchy behind and live a simple life in his home country. When the scholar jokingly asks his shadow to climb up the princess’s wall and kiss her, he accidentally brings to life his complete opposite.
It’s up to the scholar and his only true friend, Annunciata, to fight the shadow’s corrupt influence on the royal court. They learn that magic isn’t discovered—it’s created by the choices we make.
