Peruvian-American tenor Christopher Sierra joined the Conservatory in 2023 as an assistant professor of voice in the Musical Theater Department. Sierra is a versatile artist with a wide-ranging repertoire, spanning classical, musical theater, and contemporary commercial music. They have performed with prestigious opera companies and orchestras throughout the United States, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Philadelphia, Santa Fe Opera, and Spoleto Festival USA, and have been featured in concerts and recitals internationally (including Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Luxemburg, and India). Other notable engagements include performances with acclaimed groups like three-time Grammy–nominated troupe Sweet Honey in the Rock. 

Sierra is passionate about bridging the gap between classical and contemporary commercial music, and has delivered lectures and concerts exploring the intersection of contemporary commercial music performance practice and classical singing technique at several prestigious institutions throughout the United States. They are also sought after for their research in culturally responsive teaching, teaching gender-expansive singers, and overcoming performance anxiety. They have been invited to present vocal master classes, choral clinics, public lectures, and scholarly performances at institutions worldwide.

Sierra received a Doctor of Musical Arts in voice performance from Rutgers University, a Master of Education in music education from Columbia University, a  Master of Music in classical voice performance from Manhattan School of Music, and Bachelor of Music degrees in music education and voice performance from Westminster Choir College.

  • Performing in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer with the Lyric Opera of Chicago 
  • Presenting A Culturally Responsive Teaching Lens in the Music Classroom and Applied Studio at the College Music Society’s International Conference in Latvia 
  • Presenting Debunking Myths: Crossing Genres as a Classically Trained Singer at the International Scientific and Practical Conference in Azerbaijan 
  • Serving on the musical theater voice faculty at the New England Music Camp
  • Teaching voice and music-related courses at Harvard University, Tufts University, Longy School of Music of Bard College, and the Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project in South India
