Program Overview
The emphasis in dance pedagogy consists of Dance and Theater division courses that allow students interested in dance pedagogy to gain experience in teaching multiple styles of dance.
Students who opt to declare this program will take a series of courses that focus on different pedagogical styles and theories. Through discussions, research, and hands-on experience, students will learn how to teach ballet, modern, jazz, and tap dance classes. Courses of study also include Laban Movement Analysis and Advanced Alexander Technique, ensuring students have the somatic skills necessary for holistic, integrated, and structurally correct teaching.
Entrance Requirements
The emphasis in dance pedagogy is open to contemporary dance majors who have already successfully completed
D-PR 2502 Alexander Technique for Dancers 2 and D-PD 2901 Introduction to Dance Pedagogy. Please follow the regular declaration of minor/specialization procedure as outlined in the Registration Guide. This emphasis is managed by the Dance Division.Program Requirements

What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion of the emphasis in dance pedagogy, students will:
- teach dance classes of multiple genres through the use of form and structure;
- teach dance classes confidently using progressive learning plans;
- teach classes that are all-inclusive, welcoming, and supportive;
- describe/speak about their pedagogical processes and choices; and
- engage in self-reflective thought about their class delivery and engagement.
