Program Overview
Technology for dance is everything from the pointe shoe to your laptop, phone, and/or tablet. It is meant to simplify and assist or to radically innovate. The dance and technology specialization is designed to empower students by exposing them to a variety of tools available and providing hands-on skills for creative expression and workflow at all levels of performance and production. In our ever-increasingly digital world, artists—especially dancers and choreographers—are experiencing exponential growth in demand for creativity in film, video, and digital formats. This specialization will provide opportunities and experience in multiple facets of how technology can enhance and innovate dance in the digital landscape.
Entrance Requirements
The specialization in dance and technology is open to commercial and contemporary dance majors who have already successfully completed D-ST 1301 Pop Diva Dance Repertory or D-ST 2202 Modern Technique 4. To declare this specialization, students must seek approval directly from the Dance Division.
Program Requirements
The specialization in dance and technology requires students to complete 11 credits total, consisting of the course requirements listed below.
Required Courses
- D-LT 79922 Introduction to Dance and Technology (3 credits)
Elective Courses
Complete a minimum of eight credits total from the following:
- D-LT 79911 Screen Dance: Form and Fundamentals (3 credits)
- D-LT 79923 History of Dance on Film and Video (3 credits)
- D-LT 79927 Dance and Technology: Special Projects (3 credits)
- D-PR 79910 Dance Film: From Process to Presentation (2 credits)
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion of the specialization in dance and technology, students will be able to:
- describe basic knowledge of various technology platforms;
- create and produce dance and choreography using digital mediums;
- exhibit curiosity and confidence to explore and experiment with technology and dance; and,
- demonstrate basic proficiency in at least two forms of technology to complement their dance and/or choreographic training.
