Michael Goetjen is musicologist whose research focuses on eighteenth-century opera and the music of Mozart, particularly the concert aria and its role in operatic culture outside the theater. However, his research and teaching activities span a wide range of topics in early music from the Medieval period to the eighteenth century. A harpsichordist and organist as well as a musicologist, Goetjen works regularly in both classroom and performance environments. He is the director of A Joyful Noyse, an early music ensemble in residence at Hancock Church in Lexington, Massachusetts, and performs as a substitute organist at many churches in the greater Boston area. He holds a PhD in Musicology from Rutgers University.
