As an educator, I provide students with the skills they need to make strong, personalized artistic choices with confidence and flexibility. Each year, I perform a hundred or more songs with students. I'm always glad to demonstrate that I practice what I teach.

Cathy Rand began her Boston Conservatory affiliation in 1991 as a music director and has become a long-time faculty member. In addition to her contributions to curriculum development, Rand has taught undergraduate and graduate students in both the Music and Theater divisions. Her courses have included script and score analysis, music direction, music interpretation, piano, songwriting, vocal repertoire, music theory, and keyboard sight-reading.

Rand has had a diverse professional career in the arts. Her music direction, conducting, and orchestration credits include work for American Repertory Theater, Boston Conservatory, Boston Music Theater Project, Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, Huntington Theatre Company, Market Theater, and Musical Theater Works. Favorite music direction and arranging credits include Kurt Weill: Songs Degenerate and Otherwise, performed as excerpts in Michael Feinstein: Now and Then (Carnegie Hall, 2001). Rand has an extensive performance background and is a published arranger and lyricist. She was the recipient of the Boston Conservatory SGA Outstanding Theater Division Faculty of the Year (2011), and is the vice president of the Conservatory's chapter of the music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda.

Rand’s expertise, influence, and success as an educator is internationally renowned, garnering praise and appreciation from many former students whose professional work on podiums, in pits, on stage, and as teachers have contributed to countless Broadway shows, national tours, regional theaters and classrooms worldwide.

Rand earned her M.M. in piano performance and chamber music performance, summa cum laude, from the University of Maine and a B.M. in piano performance, magna cum laude, from the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music. Additionally, she was a special student in vocal accompanying at Boston University.
