Katie Lansdale

Learning is a process of discovery, but also of rediscovery: so often, a teacher only shows a student what s/he already knows. As students claim their voice and ability, they find their own musical truths.

Katie Lansdale is a professor of violin at the Conservatory. She has performed as a soloist and chamber artist throughout North America, South America, and Europe and as part of numerous concert series, including those of the Phillips Collection, the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, and Lincoln Center's Rose Theater. She has made concerto appearances with the National Symphony, Austin Mozart Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Schroeder Classical Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, New York Spectrum Orchestra, and the New York Repertory Orchestra. Widely acclaimed for solo Bach, Lansdale has performed Bach cycles a dozen times in North and South America. She is the winner of grand prizes at the Fischoff and Yellow Springs national chamber competitions and has collaborated in chamber concerts with such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Robert McDonald, Marcy Rosen, Charles Neidich, Sequitur Ensemble, the Miami Quartet, and the Shanghai Quartet.

Founder of the Locrian new music group, Lansdale's extensive chamber music concerts in New York have ranged from appearances at the Mostly Mozart festival at Lincoln Center with Yo-Yo Ma and Merkin Hall with the Twentieth Centuryists to current annual appearances in Carnegie's Weill Hall (Festival Chamber Music Society). Lansdale has performed for three decades with the Lions Gate Trio, an internationally acclaimed ensemble. Winners of the Koussevitzky Award, the trio has recorded for the Triton and Centaur labels, featuring new American trios, music by Nicolas Bacri, and trios by Schumann, Ravel, Ives, and Rebecca Clarke. Trio residencies have included Tanglewood, Yale University, the University of Pittsburgh, and, currently, the Hartt School.

Lansdale studied with Ronda Cole, Felix Galimir, Josef Gingold, Mitchell Stern, and Donald Weilerstein. She graduated cum laude from Yale, earning both arts and humanities prizes, followed by studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Manhattan School of Music. Having taught Boston University and at SUNY Stony Brook, Lansdale now teaches at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford and at Boston Conservatory.
