Adria Stolk joined the Conservatory in 2016 and is an associate professor of core studies.
Stolk teaches courses in music theory, ear training, and score reading. She is passionate about creating growth-oriented learning experiences that engage, challenge, and support all students. She strives to help students develop confidence, curiosity, creativity, musical language, skills, and tools that will support their individual journeys in creating, performing, and sharing music with others. Stolk’s pedagogical interests include supporting learner autonomy and self-direction in music theory coursework. She believes that autonomy-supportive learning experiences enable students to connect more personally to their studies and help to broaden musical perspectives in the classroom. Stolk is highly engaged in researching, analyzing, and curating music for teaching. Devoted to and passionate about the ongoing work of expanding the music theory canon, Stolk continually evaluates and redesigns her course materials to include and amplify diverse voices from the past and present. She has a particular interest in the music, lives, and work of women composers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Stolk is a composer of instrumental and vocal music. She studied with Ketty Nez, Andy Vores, and Marti Epstein, and holds degrees in composition from Boston University (DMA), Boston Conservatory (MM), and Berklee College of Music (BM). Recent works were performed by Jihye Chang, Inês Andrade, ALEA III, Arlington-Belmont Chamber Chorus, Genesis Chamber Singers, Joint Venture Percussion Duo, and the JACK Quartet.
