C. Robin Marcotte joined the Conservatory in 2018 and teaches Movement and Ensemble Performance Lab in the contemporary theater program. Trained by Etienne Decroux’s protégé, Daniel Stein, Marcotte’s pedagogy is derived from postmodern corporeal mime and Jacques Lecoq’s theories of physical acting and ensemble creation. His practice is deeply rooted in devising and “actor as creator.” Currently, his research explores areas of artistic health and wellness, as well as interdisciplinary collaboration.
Marcotte trained at the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre in Blue Lake, California. After completing the school’s professional training program, he was invited to Philadelphia to perform in Mum Puppettheatre’s production of Equus. He appeared in several Mum Puppettheatre productions, including Seance, Swan Lake, A Christmas Carol, and the award-winning From the Ashes. For the latter production, he toured with the company to the International Contemporary Dance Festival in Bytom, Poland.
Marcotte was a founding member and served as executive director/co-artistic director of Hotel Obligado Physical Theatre in Philadelphia. He created and performed five original works with Hotel Obligado, one of which is his solo play, Dottie, which concerns a woman’s battle with dementia. Marcotte won a grant from the Smart Family Foundation to remount Dottie in 2015 at Plymouth State University.
In 2010, he served as the school director for the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, where he was commissioned to create and direct The Green Fairy Cabaret for the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Additionally, Marcotte was a founding board member of Circadium School of Contemporary Circus, the nation’s first higher education circus program.
Marcotte holds an M.F.A. in interdisciplinary arts from Goddard College, with a focus in theater creation, theatrical social engagement, and theater pedagogy. He is a cofounder and producing artistic director of the nonprofit Articine, which uses the arts and medicine as a tool to train healthcare professionals in empathy.
