Vocal Arts Master Class with Patrick Hansen
Patrick Hansen is the artistic director of Opera McGill, an associate professor of music at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, a board member of the Association for Opera in Canada, and on the faculty of the Bel Canto Institute of Tuscany.
Considered a leading progressive figure in opera, he is an opera producer equally established as a conductor, stage director, vocal coach, collaborative pianist, and artistic administrator, having spent the last 40 years on the creative and producing teams for over 300 operas. He is the former director of the Young American Artist Program at Glimmerglass Opera, the former music director of the Opera Festival of New Jersey, the assistant editor of G. Schirmer’s Opera Anthology series, and has been on the music staffs of Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Juilliard Opera Center, Pittsburgh Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, and many others.
His productions have been seen all over North America and in Europe, including directing and choreographing the Bulgarian premiere of Weill’s Street Scene. He has directed at the Kennedy Center, Pittsburgh Opera, Eugene Opera, Tri Cities Opera, Charlottesville Opera, Fargo Opera, Opera5, Opera Memphis, Arizona State University, Janiec Opera Company, Opéra de Montréal, Opera on the James, Ithaca College, and almost 100 productions for Opera McGill. His conducting credits include Bluebeard’s Castle, The Magic Flute, La Traviata, Carmen, Cenerentola, Il barbiere di Siviglia, The Tender Land, The Turn of the Screw, Albert Herring, Così fan tutte, L’elisir d’amore, Le nozze di Figaro, Die Fledermaus, Hänsel und Gretel, Parade, Babes in Arms, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Dido and Aeneas, and Alcina.
This season he appears in recital with baritone Brett Polegato, will direct Rigoletto for Tri Cities Opera, serve as musical supervisor for The Light in the Piazza, and direct Imeneo (Handel) in Montreal. He lives and gardens with his family and pets in eastern Ontario.
