Rebecca Marchand joined the Conservatory in 2009 and is a professor of core studies in music history.

Marchand teaches undergraduate music history, writing about music, communicating about music, and graduate seminars in topics related to modern, avant-garde, and experimental music. Her most recent course development has focused on amplifying diverse voices in contemporary music through a variety of lenses. She also directs the graduate music history writing center at Boston Conservatory. Marchand serves as Faculty Director of the ETUDE (Enhancing Teaching through an Understanding of Diversity and Equity) Scholars at Berklee.

A founding member of the Haydn Society of North America, Marchand also served as the president of the New England chapter of the American Musicological Society from 2012 to 2016. She has held previous teaching and lecturing positions at Boston University, Longy School of Music of Bard College, and Providence College. She has presented at a variety of conferences, including a Master Teacher session at the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society and a poster session on Julius Eichberg, founder of Boston Conservatory, at the 2016 annual meeting of the Society for American Music. She has given invited talks on American Music topics at West Virginia University and University of New Hampshire. Marchand’s  essay “Missa Eclectica: Lou Harrison and Artistic Ideologies after Vatican II” appears in Qui musicam in se habet: Studies in Honor of Alejandro Enrique Planchart, edited by Anna Zayaruznaya, Bonnie Blackburn, and Stanley Boorman (American Institute of Musicology, 2015).

Marchand earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, which was conferred with a Certificate in College and University Teaching. She also holds a P.S.C. in performing arts administration from Emerson College. Her current research focuses on incorporating Universal Design for Learning and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) into music history pedagogy.
