Jonathan Bass

Jonathan Bass joined the Conservatory's piano faculty in 1993 and is a professor of piano. Bass has performed with numerous orchestras, and his recordings have received critical acclaim. A Steinway Artist, Bass made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall after being awarded first prize in the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition in 1993. He performs throughout the United States as a soloist and chamber musician and makes frequent New England appearances at Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and Tanglewood. Internationally, he has performed in China, Israel, Japan, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Spain.

Collaborative highlights include guest appearances with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players and recitals with renowned violinist Joseph Silverstein. As the pianist and a founding member of Walden Chamber Players, Bass has recorded three albums and has performed on a variety of chamber music series and residencies across the United States and Canada. He has also given numerous performances with many present and past members of the Boston Symphony.

Bass studied in the Juilliard Pre-College Division with Richard Fabre and later received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in piano from Juilliard as a student of Adele Marcus and Sascha Gorodnitzki. He holds a Doctor of Music degree from the Indiana University School of Music, where he studied with and was a teaching assistant to Menahem Pressler. Additionally, Bass has studied at the Moscow Conservatory in Russia and at Oberlin College.
