About the Artists
Carlos Manuel Vargas, piano, is an assistant professor of music at Boston Conservatory. His performances have received accolades from both audiences and critics in the United States, South America, and Europe. Learn more about Vargas. Patrice Jackson, cello, is an associate professor at Boston Conservatory who is carving out a name for herself as a gifted and charismatic soloist. The Detroit News has described her as a “big-toned, boldly projected soloist” and the Hartford Courant complimented her “effortless facility, playful phrasing, and a sense of spontaneity that one hears usually only from the highest caliber of musicians.” Learn more about Jackson. Jan Halloran, clarinet, is an assistant professor at Boston Conservatory, and holds the position of principal clarinet with Boston Lyric Opera. She regularly appears with many of Boston’s preeminent ensembles, including Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Odyssey Opera, Boston Philharmonic, and Emmanuel Music. Fueled by a passion for small ensemble collaborations, she brings expressiveness, creativity, and delight to her performances. She is deeply curious about the ways in which shared musical experiences forge connections, invite deeper dialogue, and inspire contemplation. Learn more about Howarth.Margaret Phillips, bassoon, has been a highly sought-after freelance bassoonist and contrabassoonist in Boston and the New England area for over 25 years. An associate professor at Boston Conservatory, she also teaches at Berklee College of Music and Boston University. Learn more about Phillips.Julia Glenn, violin, is an associate professor at Boston Conservatory who has been called “remarkable,” “gripping,” and “a brilliant soloist” by the New York Times. She performs internationally on modern and baroque violins, and she recently joined the Naumburg-winning Lydian String Quartet. Learn more about Glenn.Saul Bitran, violin, is an associate professor at Boston Conservatory and has been the first violinist of the award-winning Cuarteto Latinoamericano since 1986. He has received some of Mexico and Chile’s highest artistic awards, including the Bellas Artes Medal and Order of Merit Pablo Neruda. Learn more about Bitran.Randall Zigler, bass, is an associate professor at Boston Conservatory and enjoys a highly active and varied career as an orchestral and chamber musician throughout New England and New York. He has been hailed as “a revelation” for his “astounding agility … voiced with a beautiful baritone.” Learn more about Zigler. Jonathan Bass, piano, has performed with numerous orchestras, and his recordings have received critical acclaim. A Steinway Artist as well as a professor at Boston Conservatory, Bass made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall after being awarded first prize in the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition in 1993. Learn more about Bass.Ricardo Sardinas, cello, brings his unbridled energy and enthusiasm to a wide range of solo, chamber, and orchestral performances. Born and raised in Cuba, he completed his elementary and high school conservatory education in Havana, where he performed as a soloist with the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory String Orchestra at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba.
