Blue and Sentimental, Featuring Zachery Watson, Horn
Zachery Watson (BM '27) invites you to indulge in an evening of honesty and vulnerability. Rather than a traditional junior recital, imagine this program as an open dialogue—between friends, colleagues, and oneself.
The night opens with a statement of grief from the unaccompanied horn, through David Amram’s Blues and Variations for Monk. This meditative foundation leads seamlessly into York Bowen’s Sonata in E-flat, offering tender musings and harmonic explorations shaped by the great composers and soloists who came before us.
Following intermission, the tone turns toward the passions of an aspiring performer, composer, and arranger. Expect the swirling yet delicate colors of a wind quintet as Zach brings new light to Ravel’s Prelude in A Minor. The conversation continues with the angular but soulful interplay of horn and piano in Frederick Tillis’s Spiritual Fantasy. To bring the curtains forward, the audience is reunited with Bowen—this time with a three-movement epic for string quartet and solo horn, his Quintet in C Minor.
