Virtual Event

Acclaimed guest choreographers Jarek Cemerek, William Isaac, Gabrielle Lamb, and Martha Nichols and faculty member Joy Davis create new virtual works for Boston Conservatory dance students. Each artist is creating a unique online dance experience in collaboration with the dancers. All five works will be premiered live and introduced by the artists, who will provide a brief overview of the work and the creative process.

This concert will be presented virtually. A link to view the concert will be available here prior to the performance.

Director's Note

As the Dance Division’s first ever virtual performance, this year’s From the Ground Up is like none other. I believe you will be amazed with the creative abilities of the sophomore, junior, and senior dance majors during this most unusual and difficult time. The opportunity to rehearse and perform “together” with their class has meant more than ever before. I am very excited to have been able to commission five world premieres for this year’s program and I extend a heartfelt thank you to each of the choreographers for sharing their artistry and expertise with our students.

As always, I am deeply committed to exposing our students to a diverse range of artistic voices and approaches. Each of the choreographic residencies this semester gave our students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the creative processes of these world-class artists.

The students are always at the center of the Dance Division, and our goal is to help them realize their full potential, not only as performers, but also as creative and entrepreneurial artists. We guide and educate them, helping them grow as young adults finding their way in the world, giving them opportunities to experience different points of view and ways of seeing the life around them. They learn how to be engaged citizens of the world in order to make the world a better place through the arts.

The theme of our unimaginable fall semester is:

Reaffirming what you have. Reimagining what you know.
Finding freedom in restrictions. Expanding your artistic vision.

I believe that all the From the Ground Up artists have proven themselves in promoting these ideals in the performances you will enjoy in this very special production.

Our being, our life, is permanently interwoven with boundaries, in space and in time. Our whole life is delimited and limited by boundaries. Our skin is the boundary that is still with us. Death is our last boundary. When we love, we desire to get behind the boundary of the beloved. Boundaries are a challenge. Boundaries show us that we do not want to be alone.
