Bold, irreverent, and fiercely theatrical, Marie Antoinette by David Adjmi reimagines the life of France’s most infamous queen through a striking contemporary lens. Beginning with her arrival at Versailles as a teenage bride, then charting her meteoric rise—and devastating fall—the play blends historical drama with modern language, music, and design, to explore celebrity, excess, and the price of living under constant public scrutiny.
As Marie navigates the rigid expectations of court life, her hunger for freedom, pleasure, and identity collides with a society on the brink of revolution. Adjmi’s darkly comic and visually explosive script draws sharp parallels between eighteenth-century France and today’s culture of fame, consumption, and spectacle.
Directed by theater faculty member Marianna Bassham, Marie Antoinette invites audiences to reconsider the myth behind the icon, and to reflect on the systems that build up, consume, and ultimately destroy those placed at the center of attention.
This performance has been selected as part of Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s 2026–2027 Center Stage collection.
