She Loves Me
Set in a 1930s European perfumery, She Loves Me is a charming romantic musical about two feuding shop clerks who are unaware that they are secretly falling in love as anonymous pen pals. With a soaring score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof), this intimate and witty show captures the magic of connection, the vulnerability of love, and the joy of discovering that the person you’ve been searching for might be right in front of you.
Featuring lush, witty songwriting—including favorites such as “Vanilla Ice Cream,” “Tonight at Eight,” and “She Loves Me”—this beloved musical is based on the play Parfumerie by Miklós László. Set in 1930’s Budapest, the show concerns the adventures of the parfumerie manager, Georg Nowack, who is constantly at odds with the most recent addition to the staff, a young woman named Amalia Balash. As their anonymous letters grow increasingly heartfelt and intimate, their real-life animosity intensifies—leading to a delightful series of misunderstandings, comic mishaps, and tender revelations.
With its vividly drawn ensemble of shop employees, and its blend of sparkling comedy and heartfelt romance, She Loves Me has been enchanting audiences for generations. It was first made into the movie The Shop Around the Corner, starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, and later adapted into the famous Judy Garland film In the Good Old Summertime—which also inspired the modern favorite You've Got Mail.
This performance has been selected as part of Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s 2026–2027 Center Stage collection.
