Program Notes
EUN YOUNG LEE: Yun for solo bassoon (2018)
During my residency at the Isang Yun Haus in Berlin in 2018, I wrote a solo bassoon piece, Yun, commissioned by bassoonist Adrian Morejon. Living in the Isang Yun house helped me to imagine the life of this seminal Korean composer more closely, and contemplate his advocacy for a peaceful Korean peninsula. This piece has become the seed of my ongoing Korean Peace Project.
EUN YOUNG LEE: Pax Aeterna for bassoon and string quartet (2024)
Pax Aeterna is a piece for bassoon and string quartet based on both North and South Korean folk tunes (Mong-geum po-ta-ryung, Ong-hae-ya, Do-ra-ji, and Arirang), and it is a part of my piece project: a series of compositions that acknowledge and express my personal belief in the importance of world peace, especially on the Korean peninsula. This piece is for my dear friends, bassoonist Adrian Morejon and the Momenta Quartet. July 27, 2023 marked the 70th anniversary of the Korean armistice agreement. Remembering the years of armistice in Korea and wishing for peace on the peninsula, I hope to spread awareness of the history and present condition of the Korean peninsula, and to build a bridge not only between the two Koreas but also to gather hope for a peaceful world among nations.
