Program Notes
J.S. BACH: Cello Suite No. 6 in D Major, BWV 1012
The cello composition BWV 1012, without accompaniment, is the largest of all six songs, and has a magnificent atmosphere of spirit and courage. Originally written for viola pomposa, a five-string instrument that adds a high E string above the A string, it uses a vocal range of more than three octaves, which makes it very difficult to play on the cello.
BEETHOVEN: Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 3 in A Major, Op. 69
Beethoven completed five cello sonatas throughout his life, of which Cello Sonata No. 3 is the most famous and widely known. It's more like a concerto, with the piano and the cello playing on equal footing, rather than a cello solo. Cello Sonata No. 3 shows the existing cello's charm—stable, low, and heavy—as well as its latent abilities; and it is a work that shows that cello is dramatic and high-pitched.
