Welcome to WinterWorks 2022!

This annual dance performance features the mainstage debut of our first-year students with newly created works for the 2022 WinterWorks program. This year, our first-year students are featured in three stunning works by alumni guest artists Asia Pyron (B.F.A. ’20, dance), Laila Franklin (B.F.A. ’19, dance), and Joe Gonzalez (B.F.A. ’11, dance). They are exceptional artists and dance-makers, and we are fortunate that they have returned to share their creative insights with our young dancers. The Alumni Commissioning Project, which has made these new works possible, reinforces the Dance Division's commitment to supporting the growth of our students as creative artists and choreographers after they graduate by annually commissioning and presenting mainstage works for WinterWorks. 

Also on the program, we feature 11 original works by sophomore, junior, and senior student choreographers. Dance composition faculty Brian McGinnis, Daniel McCusker, and I have been guiding students towards the development of the creative process and the realization of making choreography. The pieces on this program were adjudicated by a panel of faculty members and chosen by a majority consensus. This year’s panel members were Daniel McCusker, Brian McGinnis, Kurt Douglas, Joy Davis, Junichi Fukuda, and Ruka White. Tonight, we witness the chosen results from the adjudication process and we congratulate all of the students who contributed to the process of making these new works come alive. 

The sophistication of our student-created work illustrates the strength of our dance composition curriculum. The Dance Division was recently named “one of the ten best college programs for aspiring choreographers" by College Magazine. We are excited to present the talent and creativity of our young choreographers tonight. Thank you for being a part of the journey. Enjoy!
