About the Artists
Jonathan Bass, piano, is a Steinway Artist who made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall after being awarded first prize in the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition in 1993. He performs throughout the United States as a soloist and chamber musician and makes frequent New England appearances at Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and Tanglewood. Internationally, he has performed in China, Israel, Japan, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Spain. Learn more about Bass. Judith Eissenberg, violin, is founder of the Grammy-nominated Lydian String Quartet, a group that has recorded extensively and won top prizes at the Evian, Banff, and Portsmouth international string quartet competitions. An active chamber musician, Eissenberg performs regularly throughout the US and abroad and is involved with Boston Chamber Music Society and Emmanuel Music. Learn more about Eissenberg. Jan Halloran, clarinet, serves as principal clarinet with Boston Lyric Opera and performs regularly with Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Odyssey Opera, Boston Philharmonic, Emmanuel Music, and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. She is a founding member of the New England Reed Trio, with whom she performed, recorded, and commissioned dozens of new works for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon as part of their mission to enhance and share reed trio repertoire. Learn more about Halloran. Paul Laraia, viola, has been acclaimed by The Strad for his “eloquent” and “vibrant” playing. He is an active soloist, chamber musician, and new music proponent. In competition, he was awarded first prize in the 13th Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, first prize in the 14th National Sphinx Competition, and gold medal with high distinction at the fifth Manhattan International Music Competition. Learn more about Laraia. Markus Placci, violin, has been praised for having “a magnificent personality, a superb energy, a total command, and an extremely convincing taste” (La Libre Belgique). Placci’s international reputation has earned him solo appearances throughout Europe, South America, Asia, and the United States at renowned venues such as the Great Philharmonic Hall (Shostakovich Hall) and Glinka Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, the Kursaal in Baden-Baden, and the Teatro Monumental in Madrid. Rhonda Rider, cello, has been described by the Boston Globe as “a glorious cellist,” remarkable for her “extraordinarily expressive and inventive playing.” A founding member of the Naumburg Award–winning Lydian String Quartet, with whom she played for over 20 years, Rider is a member of the Triple Helix Piano Trio.
