The Rake’s Progress
A brilliant fusion of wit and musical invention, Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress captivatingly explores themes of ambition, temptation, and transformation. Inspired by William Hogarth’s celebrated artwork—and borrowing from the Faustian tradition—the opera follows Tom Rakewell as he journeys through a world of desire, illusion, and self-discovery.
With a dazzling neoclassical score that reimagines the elegance and energy of eighteenth-century opera, and a masterfully crafted libretto by poets W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman, Stravinsky creates a work that is both intellectually playful and deeply human. Filled with theatrical brilliance, musical sophistication, and unexpected humor, The Rake’s Progress remains one of the twentieth century’s great operatic achievements.
Boston Conservatory’s production is directed by David Gately and conducted by Andrew Bisantz.
This performance has been selected as part of Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s 2026–2027 Center Stage collection.
