Biography

Tim Espinosa joined Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2023 as chair of theater. 

With a diverse skill set as a director, educator, actor, and violinist, Espinosa’s approach to theater training is centered around a holistic, multicultural perspective, informed by his research on strategies that empower students and faculty to advocate for social justice.

Prior to joining the Conservatory, Espinosa was an assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre. Previously, he founded and led the musical theater program at Fullerton College in Southern California, dedicating himself to providing musical theater training to underrepresented communities. He has taught numerous courses in theater arts, including multicultural perspectives of theater, acting, directing, and musical theater performance.

Espinosa actively contributes to addressing diversity and inclusion and creating safe learning environments in the field of theater. He served as the lead diversity officer for the Musical Theatre Educators’ Alliance (MTEA) and founded MTEA’s Committee on Representation, Equity, and Inclusion. In these capacities, he facilitated numerous industry discussions on best practices to promote antiracist policies within theater education. He also has led panels addressing race, equity, and inclusion in musical theater, white fragility in theater education, and decolonizing the musical theater curriculum and has conducted international workshops, titled Reclaiming the Narrative, to help guide faculty and staff in creating antiracist and safe learning spaces for students. 

As an actor, Espinosa has performed for international audiences in esteemed venues, including appearances at Goodspeed Musicals, Papermill Playhouse, American Repertory Theater, North Shore Music Theatre, New Repertory Theatre, Utah Shakespeare Festival, and the Berkshire Theatre Festival, among others.

He is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and the Actors’ Equity Association, and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theater from California State University at Fullerton and a Master of Fine Arts in acting from Brandeis University.
