David R. Gammons

The qualities I most look for in a performing artist are bravery, vulnerability, and generosity. I encourage students to embrace their passions, acknowledge their faults, celebrate their individuality, and recognize their potential.
David R. Gammons joined the Conservatory in 2015 and is an associate professor of theater teaching courses in theater history and practice, alternative and devised processes, and design for the stage.
A director, designer, educator, and visual artist, Gammons teaches in the Music and Theater Arts Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in addition to Boston Conservatory, and works as a freelance director in Boston. His award-winning professional productions have been seen at the American Repertory Theater, Huntington Theatre, SpeakEasy Stage Company, New Repertory Theatre, Actors' Shakespeare Project, Nora Theatre Company, Underground Railway Theater, and Boston Playwrights' Theatre. He has been a guest artist and visiting lecturer at Northeastern University, Suffolk University, Boston College, Brandeis University, Harvard University, and many other institutions. In recent years, his directing projects have been nominated for 36 Elliot Norton Awards and 46 Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards. He was awarded the Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Director in 2007 and 2017.
Gammons is a graduate of the Directing Program at the American Repertory Theater Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University, and he received his A.B. from the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University.
He resides in a rambling 1750 farmhouse in scenic Bolton, Massachusetts
