Marcus Giamatti joined the Conservatory in 2019 and is a professor of theater specializing in acting and scene study techniques for the camera. Giamatti has been a working actor for over 35 years and is best known for the role of Peter Gray on the long-running CBS drama Judging Amy. Currently, he can be seen on Amazon Freevee in Bosch: Legacy, playing the recurring role of Simon Wakefield. Giamatti has appeared in over a dozen films and 100 guest star roles, including dozens of recurring and series regular roles, soaps, national commercials, and voice-overs. His extensive theater credits include work on Broadway, Lincoln Center, off-Broadway, and regionally around the country, from the Seattle Rep to the Guthrie, the Goodman, Hartford Stage, Long Wharf, Williamstown (over 20 productions), the Yale Rep, and the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center (five seasons). 

In 2013, Giamatti founded his own acting studio in Los Angeles, where he served as the master teacher. He also taught courses for several years at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the theater and dance bachelor of fine arts program and at the UCSB film school. Currently, Giamatti is the head of the M.F.A. and undergraduate directing programs and is an associate professor of acting and directing at Temple University’s School of Theater, Film and Media Arts. Giamatti also served as the director of education at the Ensemble Theater Company in Santa Barbara, where he developed original outreach programming, including the ETC Young Playwright’s Festival, Adopt-a-School, and the Young Actor’s Conservatory, a craft-based acting program for local high school students. 

Giamatti is an accomplished professional session bass guitarist with a degree in jazz bass from the Stinnett School of Music. He is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, with an M.F.A. in acting, where he received the Carole Dye Award for Excellence in Performance in 1987. Giamatti also holds a B.A. in ethnomusicology and history from Bowdoin College.
